Both of my boys lately — I’m talking during, say, the last two weeks or so? — ask about every noise.
From the six-year-old —“Mom? Is the washer on?”
“Mommy? Did you hear that upstairs?”
“Mommy? Is that you? Oh okay.”
The three-year-old—“Mama, are there monsters back here in the pantery [sic].”
What is the moment zero for these sudden, very specific fears? They are constantly now asking me if I’m sure that no one will break in and take them. And I admit their sudden, very specific fears are rubbing off on me. I'm noticing lots of noises now, too.
Did they overhear a news report about a kidnapped child? Was it on effin Spongebob?
They’ve both used the word idiot recently — directed at each other in anger — and, when confronted, claim it came from Spongebob. Spongebob! I'd always liked the show. I'd thought it entertaining. Funny. A bit trippy, but harmless. I guess I never really thought about what it was I was watching.
The six-year-old relayed to me just two days ago, “My teacher says I shouldn’t be watching Spongebob.”
Oh, really? Why??
“Because she says we’re too young.”
Really? Well. Okay, what else did she say?
“She said that you can hear bad words on Spongebob and it’s violent.”
So the words. And the fears. For about roughly two weeks…
Effin Spongebob.
